President Cyril Ramaphosa inaugurates Vedanta Gamsberg Phase II expansion project, 16 Oct
President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Friday, 16 October 2026, officiate the inaugural Vedanta Zinc International’s (VZI) Gamsberg Phase II Expansion in Khâi-Ma Local Municipality in the Namakwa District.
Themed “Partnerships for Progress”, the inauguration will mark a significant milestone in VZI’s long-term commitment to South Africa and highlight the role of collaboration between government, business, employees and communities in advancing inclusive growth and regional development.
The Phase II expansion is among the largest mining investments in South Africa in the past decade and increases Gamsberg’s annual zinc-in-concentrate capacity to approximately 500 000 tonnes per annum.
This expansion positions Gamsberg to become one of the world’s largest zinc-producing operations. It is expected to sustain between 800 and 1 000 jobs during operations, predominantly recruited from the Northern Cape, reinforcing VZI’s contribution to local employment, skills development and economic activity.
