MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela welcomes PRASA rail improvements and City to City bus fleet launch

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has welcomed ongoing efforts by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) to revitalise passenger rail services, enhance operational safety, and strengthen the provision of reliable and affordable public transport.

The MEC participated in a Ministerial Oversight Visit led by the Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, to assess improvements along the Mabopane Rail Corridor, visit the Centralised Train Control Centre (CTC), and witness the launch of the new City to City long-distance bus fleet.

MEC Diale-Tlabela commended PRASA for its work to restore railway infrastructure, upgrade signaling systems, and improve operational safety and the reliability of train services.

“We welcome the progress being made by PRASA to rebuild passenger rail services and improve the commuting experience of our people. Reliable and affordable rail transport is essential to connecting communities to economic opportunities, employment, education and essential services,” said MEC Diale-Tlabela.

The MEC emphasised the importance of developing an integrated public transport network that enables commuters to travel conveniently and affordably between trains, buses and taxis.

She noted that the restoration of passenger rail services, alongside improvements in long-distance bus operations, contributes to a broader public transport system that responds to the mobility needs of communities.

“For many working-class households, the cost and reliability of public transport have a direct impact on their daily lives. Our vision must be an integrated transport system where commuters can move between different modes of transport safely, conveniently and affordably,” she said.

MEC Diale-Tlabela underscored that investment in infrastructure and operational improvements must be accompanied by sustained attention to passenger safety, service reliability, and accountability.

The MEC reiterated the department’s commitment to working with national government, PRASA, transport operators, and other stakeholders to advance an integrated, accessible and reliable public transport network.

“We congratulate PRASA on the progress being made and acknowledge the importance of continued investment in passenger transport. We must build on these improvements to ensure that our public transport system responds to the needs of commuters and supports a safer, more connected and economically inclusive South Africa,” concluded MEC Diale-Tlabela.
